Second Collection: On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Your financial contribution helps to support the struggling Christian community and to protect Christianity’s holiest places.
FASTING & ABSTINENCE: In the Catholic tradition, fasting is observed on Good Friday by those between the ages of 18 and 59. When fasting, we may eat one full meal and, if needed to maintain strength, two other smaller meals. Together the smaller meals should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Although not required, you may extend this fast on Holy Saturday as we remember Christ in the grave, and end our fast with the Easter celebration. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are encouraged. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
??On Holy Thursday, we celebrate a special Mass remembering how Jesus washed the feet of His apostles and asked us to serve one another. At the close of Mass, we join the apostles in waiting with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. Don’t rush out after Mass, but plan to stay with Christ in adoration for a short time - to watch and pray. A sign-up sheet is in the commons.
??On Good Friday, in remembrance of Christ’s death, we may not celebrate Mass. Instead, we gather for a different kind of worship. A large cross is placed near the altar, and we come forward to thank Jesus for giving His life for us. The Eucharist is reserved from a previous celebration of Mass. So we have a communion service, rather than a consecration.
??The Easter Vigil is the greatest celebration of the church year. It begins outside after dark with a campfire and the blessing of the Easter candle, which will be used throughout the coming year at every baptism and funeral as a symbol of the resurrection. We then process into the church where we wait in candlelight for the proclamation that Christ is risen. At this Mass, our RCIA candidates are baptized, confirmed, and receive their first Eucharist.
A RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT for healing from abortion will be held April 9-11 at the Benedictine Abbey in Richmond and includes discussions, spiritual exercises, the sacrament of Reconciliation, Memorial Service, and Mass of Entrustment. For more info: www.rachelsvineyard.org
April 11th is Divine Mercy Sunday - a time when we remember the incredible mercy & forgiveness available to us from God. Come to Eucharistic Adoration and the sacrament of Reconciliation that Sunday afternoon at 2 pm & enjoy the peace that Jesus has won for us. We will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet together at 3 p.m.
